God is Listening! Lets pray together today!

Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?” The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

I live in a nice neighborhood. I would rather that beggars, refugees, homeless people and criminals are kept away.

But Jesus, you were a refugee. You were homeless. You were treated as though you were a criminal. I’m afraid to ask you to put me in the path of these people. To be honest, I’m scared of them, and not sure how to help them.

But I serve you. Send them my way as you see fit, and help me see your face in theirs whenever I encounter them.

Count me among your sheep on your right hand, to whom you say: “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the World.”  [Matthew 25: 33-40.]

A memoir and devotional by
Anthony Eckshar MD

On March 20, 2020, anticipating the struggle of a lifetime against Covid pneumonia in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where I worked, I resolved to say a prayer a day for a hundred days.  Over the next two years, my partners and I witnessed the deaths of over 400 patients from Covid pneumonia despite the highest levels of life support we could provide.  I survived the fear, exhaustion, dehumanization and anger I experienced along the way only through my commitment to prayer.  In this book, I record 272 of these prayers and the story of what happened to our patients, their families and our ICU team.  I learned that the only thing required to receive the gift of faith is to pray for it, and that even a regular person like me can call forth miracles in God’s name.

More Prayers from Anthony

Thank you Father for the mysteries of the universe, this verdant planet, my comfortable home, my beautiful family, the people I work with, friends and neighbors.

Thank you for all the experiences of my life, all the opportunities to learn, to help each other.

Thank you for revealing yourself to me and bringing me purpose, down to the smallest details of my life, those things no one sees but you.

Thank you Jesus, for your sacrifice to make me worthy to receive God’s love and for saving a place for me at your table in paradise.
